Sziget Festival as usually referred the Sziget is a most popular musical Festival in Hungary. The name means island in Hungarian and refers to the Hajogyari (Boat factory that were in the South part of the island) or Obudai (Old Buda) island in North of Budapest. They find Roman era arceological traces in the area. The first festival was organised as a “Student Sziget” in 1993 based on the idea of Peter Gerendai and Peter Muller with the assistance of Balazs Szekfu. The Sziget festival currently has 380 000 visitors from the beginning number of 43 000 visitors in 1993.
The Hajogyar sziget area is 108 Hectare. Several playground can be found in the area, the most interesting is the Rodli hill that was rebuilt in 2004 with it’s several huge slides loved by the children.
The area also has significant natural values. Lots of water birds can be seen at bird migration.
The area can be accessed by a “K” shape truss steel bridge from Buda side from 1955.
Most of the area had been covered by forests, only small portion was the area of the Boat factory. Later a well equipped Pioneer Camp had been built at the area.
Apart from the Festival period the island is a popular free time area of Budapest, but usually not so crowded as the City park for example.
How to get there ?
Local train (HEV) from Batthyanyi square. The train starts at the lowest level from the station at take off at Filatorigat.
